I had no idea that the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn (Wuppertal's Suspension Railway) existed until I watched this film from 1902!
The 68mm film that this was shot on is what really makes it. Thanks to the clarity of this extra large film stock, we get an incredibly detailed journey through a German town at the start of the 1900s.
While not a particularly story driven feature, the passage of 120 years has given it some real depth. The contrast between this futuristic steampunk train above and the horse-drawn buggies and Victorian dress below is quite striking and it has a real whimsical, magical realism quality to it.
I love that this movie exists.
I love that I learned about this fantastic contraption from it.
I very much love the fact that it still exists today! You can ride it right now!
